GHANA: In 2004, la Familia founder, Brian Bromka, traveled to Ghana, West Africa, and met a remarkable woman named Edith de Vos.  German born, Edith had moved to Ghana to teach in the public schools. Because of her vociferous rejection of the practice of "caning" (disciplining students by hitting them with a stick) she quit the public school system and started her own school called the "Baobab Children's Foundation" for homeless children whom she had found abandoned and roaming the streets with no food, medicine or family (www.baobab-children-foundation.de/index_en.html). From donated land near the Cape Coast, she constructed a few simple buildings, created a bicycle repair shop  for income and began to house, feed and educate homeless children and to teach them the traditional songs and dances of their people.

Each Christmas La Familia raises funds to sponsor two children at the Baobab Children's Foundation. Photos of our "adopted" children, Grace & Emmanuel, appear above and below. Your contribution to the school can be made year 'round by clicking on the link, above, or by contacting us at lafamilia@twcny.rr.com.

SYRACUSE:  Throughout the year, La Familia de la Salsa raises money for the "Latino Theater and Dance Youth Troupe" (aka: La Joven Guardia del Teatro Y la Danza Latina), of  the Spanish Action League of Onondaga County. This award-winning troupe is open to all school-age children, mounts one major theatrical production a year and performs in numerous special projects of theater, dance and general arts in the community, year 'round. Through their participation in the theater arts, the children are encouraged to connect with, and share, their culture. In addition, Founder and Artistic Director, Jose Miguel Hernandez, uses theater to re-enforce positive attitudes about issues such as avoiding teen-pregnancy and seeking higher education.
