About Us
La Familia de la Salsa began in 2004 as a Salsa/Rueda demo team
comprised of 26 dancers from around the world. By advancing our mission statement of, "bridging cultures
through dance...one step at a time",
la Familia has has grown to become one of the largest Latin dance organizations in Upstate New York
with over 2300 dancers on our member roster. We bring Latin dances to
our community every Fri & most Sat nights (see "Where to Dance")
with a live Latin orchestra dance at least once a month. Our dance school teaches 150-200 students per week, offering classes in: Salsa, Cardio Salsa,
Ladies Styling
and Cuban styles of Salsa known as "Casino", "Rueda de Casino" (the "Wheel")
and & "Comparsa" (see "Dance Classes").
Our dance ensembles and our Afro-Cuban Band, "La Rumba Cubana", has opened for and/or performed with such luminaries
as, living Salsa legend, Larry Harlow & the Fania All-Stars; Salsa
mega-star, Tito Nieves; and international icon, "Charo"!
We also spearhead fundraising efforts for local youths of the Spanish Action League's "La Joven Guardia Teatro y la Danza Latina" and for
disadvantaged children at the "Baobab Children's Foundation" in Ghana, West Africa (see "Our Adopted Children").
Most recently, la Familia was awarded the FLACNY "Friends of
Foreign Language" award for making the greatest contribution to foreign
languages in Central New York in 2008 (see "Conversational Spanish").
Please peruse our website and then come to our "Salsa Survival Lesson for Beginners" on Friday Nights at Ballybay Pub/Nightclub
(see "Dance Classes") and experience, firsthand, the joy, excitement and community of Latin dancing!
You'll LOVE it......es una PROMESA (...that's a PROMISE)!
Que viva la Salsa!
